guiding questions for our novel study:
o How did the 1920’s change and
influence American culture in ways that still exist today?
o What impact did money have on
the events of the 1920’s?
o What is the American Dream?
- Answer the questions for each website
- Come back to class on Tuesday with information to
share
Websites: Visit each website,
gather notes at the site, and answer the questions for each site.
1. Art http://www.mfa.org/hopper/index.html
- Read “The Artist” page – How would you describe Hopper’s life and
work?
- Look at the “Exhibition” page and open the “Slideshow” of his
paintings. Look at these works in particular and their descriptions:
“Automat,” “Chop Suey,” and “Nighthawks.” Even though his paintings
were not just created in the 1920’s, what American beliefs were being
conveyed in his paintings?
2. Significant Events of the 1920’s http://ehistory.osu.edu/osu/mmh/clash/default.htm
- In the “Prohibition,” section, explore the posters and photos
sections. Print out one of the posters or cartoons & attach to your
answers. What do you believe people were supposed to think by seeing
this image? Is there anything similar being communicated in our world
today about alcohol?
- Explore the “Immigration Restriction” section. Who were nativists?
Why was there a concern in this time period about immigration? What
steps were taken in the 1920’s to control immigration?
- Go through the “New Woman” pages. What does that term imply? Why were
some people against this new phenomenon?

- What did you find the most interesting landmark sports moment from
the 1920’s?
4. Fashion http://www.vintageblues.com/history2.htm
