Below is a model of Bignor Villa in Sussex, England. The villa probably dates from the 4th century A.D. It may very well have been built to resemble the palace nearby that had been built for King Cogidubnus

 

Craftsmen from Italy came to Roman Britain to lay mosaic floors like this one.

Quid pro quo? Was the palace built for Cogidubnus as a reward for his loyalty to the Romans? The Emperor Claudius made him a king among the local tribes and granted him citizenship. Every year, Cogidubnus held a ceremony at the palace honoring the memory of Claudius. (Stage 15)
