Course objectives and description:

  • To continue to develop skills in reading and comprehending Latin texts
  • To study grammatical principles in Latin which transfer to English
  • To broaden and deepen the students' English vocabulary through the study of word origins
  • To study the language, customs, and world view of a society from a different time and place than our own and to make connections between the two cultures.

 

Course content:

In order to integrate culture with language, the following themes will be studied in Stages 29-34 in the textbook, Cambridge Latin III Unit 3.

  • Roman Builders
  • The City of Rome
  • Patronage
  • Roman Society
  • Astrology, Philosophy and other Beliefs; Stoicism and Christianity
  • Entertainment
  • Freedmen

Additional readings may include some of the following:

Stories from Greek and Roman Mythology: The Heroes: Perseus, Hercules, Jason, and Ulysses

A unit on the history of the Julio-Claudian Emperors

Poetry and satire introduced through the reading of several of Martial's Epigrams.
