Course objectives and description:
- To continue to develop skills in reading and
comprehending Latin texts.
- To study grammatical principles in Latin which
transfer to English.
- To broaden and deepen the students' English
vocabulary through the study of word origins
- To study the language, customs, and world view
of a society from a different time and place than our own and to
make connections between the two cultures.
Course content:
The Latin II class will cover Stages 16-28 in two
textbooks, Cambridge Latin Unit II and Unit
III.
The following themes which relate to daily life
during the Roman Empire will be studied:
- Life in the Roman provinces of Egypt and
Britain
- Glassmaking in Alexandria
- The Worship of Isis
- Medicine and Science
- Aquae Sulis and its Baths
- Magic and Curses
- Roman Religion
- Travel and Communication
- The Legionary Soldier
- Agricola, Governor of Britain
There may also be readings and projects based on
Greek and Roman myths.
