Course objectives and description:

  • To develop a functional skill in reading and comprehending Latin texts
  • To make connections between the two cultures
  • To study grammatical principles in Latin which transfer to English
  • To broaden and deepen the students' English vocabulary through the study of word origins
  • To acquire an excellent basis for the study of modern Romance languages
  • To study the language, customs, and world view of a society from a different time and place than our own

     

The course will utilize two textbooks, Cambridge Latin Unit I and Unit II.

 

In order to integrate culture with language, the following themes will be studied in Stages 1-16.

  • The town of Pompeii
  • Houses
  • The Forum
  • The Theater
  • Slaves and Freedmen
  • Roman Beliefs about Life after Death
  • Gladiatorial Shows
  • The Baths
  • Schools
  • Local Government and Elections
  • The Destruction and Excavation of Pompeii
  • The Romans in Britain
  • Cogidubnus, King of the Regnenses
  • The Palace at Fishbourne
