Course objectives and description:
- To develop a functional skill in reading and comprehending
Latin texts
- To make connections between the two cultures
- To study grammatical principles in Latin which transfer to
English
- To broaden and deepen the students' English vocabulary through
the study of word origins
- To acquire an excellent basis for the study of modern Romance
languages
- To study the language, customs, and world view of a society
from a different time and place than our own
The course will utilize two textbooks, Cambridge Latin Unit I
and Unit II.
In order to integrate culture with language, the following themes
will be studied in Stages 1-16.
- The town of Pompeii
- Houses
- The Forum
- The Theater
- Slaves and Freedmen
- Roman Beliefs about Life after Death
- Gladiatorial Shows
- The Baths
- Schools
- Local Government and Elections
- The Destruction and Excavation of Pompeii
- The Romans in Britain
- Cogidubnus, King of the Regnenses
- The Palace at Fishbourne
