SPANISH CURRICULUM GRADE 7
Program Goal: Expose Grade seven students to the Spanish language and
culture. Students will develop the ability to use the Spanish language
for basic, purposeful communication and it will be a positive exposure
to foreign language.
In the seventh grade Spanish curriculum there are three units of study
and one required cultural project.
The oral conversation unit begins the course. At the end of this unit,
students will be able to:
A. Greet and respond to greetings
B. Introduce themselves and respond to introductions
C. Introduce others and give background information
D. Ask and respond to questions related to where they and others are
from
E. Ask and respond to questions about how they feel
F. Understand the -two forms of the verb to be (Ser and Estar) and be
able to conjugate these verbs.
G.. Understand singular and subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc)
H. Differentiate between the singular informal form of you in Spanish
and the singular formal form. (tu vs. usted)
I. Proper forms of saying goodbye
J. Days of the week and months of the year.
K. Numbers 0-1000 orally and written
L. Recite and understand the Spanish alphabet
M. Spell words using the alphabet
N. Phonetically spell Spanish words
O. Colors
P. Recognize and understand the concept of gender in nouns
Q. Follow simple classroom instructions in Spanish
R. Understand classroom objects and vocabulary
S. Describe the weather and seasons
The Second Unit has the
overriding theme of Friendship. This includes
likes and dislikes and cultural understanding. At the end of this unit
students will be able to:
A. Correctly use the -two forms of the verb to be (Ser and Estar) and
be
able
to conjugate the verbs.
B. Discuss activities that they like and dislike.
C. Be able to ask others about their likes and dislikes.
D. Discuss the above using correct, subject pronouns and word agreement
E. Use adjectives to describe characteristics of themselves and others
F. Correctly conjugate verbs according to appropriate subject.
G. Recognize and correctly utilize the concept of gender with adjectives
H. Write a simple descriptive paragraph/ poem about themselves and
someone else in Spanish with no major errors
I. Describe similarities and differences between friendship in the U.
S. and Spanish speaking countries
The third unit is briefly
introduced in conjunction with the first
unit. School is the overriding theme of the chapter. The student will
be able to:
A. Describe classroom materials and tell what they need for each subject
B. Be able to write and understand their schedule in Spanish
There will also be one project at the end of the term. The
project topic varies. Examples of past projects are:
- Describe in detail the tourist attractions of a country
of choice and make a travel brochure. The second part of the
projectis to highlight a cultural area of interest and discuss it with
the class. The main goal of the project is to understand the
differences and similarities in each of the Spanish countries worldwide
- A project on different holidays in the Spanish
speaking world. Each student chooses a holiday and describes the
cultural significance for a particular country. They will also
compare/contrast that holiday to a North American holiday. The
main goal of the project is to understand the differences and
similarities between fiestas in each of the Spanish countries worldwide.
- A project on a public health topic which combines,
computer art and health skills. Students are placed in groups and
given a topic to research (smoking prevention/ self esteem etc) Each
group will make a computer generated print advertisement for their
campaign as well as a power point commercial. Students are
required to narrate in Spanish.
- A project on the Aztecs and natural
medicine. We discuss the culture of the Aztecs and their
civilization. We
learn about their contributions and the impact of the Spanish
conquest. We
make an Aztec Calendar, and learn about their advanced knowledge of
medicinal plants. We learn body parts and make several medicinal
teas to
try in class. Each student will make a book (Codex) about their
daily
life or life of the Aztecs, or a medicinal codex.
- This project is to expose students to visual art
and culture of the Spanish and Hispanic world. Each student is
assigned an artist and does a little research on that artist using the
computer lab at school. A
short summary of that artist’s biography and work will be shown to the
class on our museum
day. Students make a visual representation of their artists work
their own medium. Ideas
include paint, draw, clip art, collage, sculpt, power point, dance,
or write a poem or a song about
the artist.
